Noorjehan Safia Niaz is the co-founder of Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan [BMMA], a secular, autonomous mass based national movement of Muslim women. She is also the Founder member and Managing Trustee of Ashana Trust which works towards supporting initiatives of women from marginalized communities for justice, peace and development. Through the years she has concentrated on developing the capacities of marginalized Muslim women, locally and nationally. She has developed many educational and awareness materials on Muslim family law.
As part of BMMA’s work with Muslim women she has been the co-petitioner in the Haji Ali Dargah PIL in the Mumbai High Court. BMMA won the case both at the Mumbai High Court as well as at the Supreme Court. She was also a co-petitioner in a PIL in Supreme Court demanding a legal ban on the practice of unilateral divorce and halala. She has written an article in Indian Journal of Secularism on ‘Origins, Structures, Functions and Alliances of Mahila Mandals Managed by Muslim Women’.
